:SPOILER INFORMATION WITHIN: I think Rambo would have given the cross back to Sarah, as he gave Co's Buddha to the Afghan boy. Even if he had it on at the end of the film, he wouldn't want any reminders of conflict. He's trying to get AWAY from it. Sarah was crying at the end because she realized exactly what a 'war zone' is - I think she was a little naive on that score - they all were. 'Here, let's go help these people and nothing will happen to us because Jesus is on our side.' APOLOGIES TO YOU WHO ARE RELIGIOUS!! But this is the world. This is the way of the world. John knew, and John was staring at her as if to say 'Do you see now? Do you see what I was trying to tell you?' I did not see any exchange of any sort of 'love' in that scene. Sarah was crying because she at last realized what he had been trying to tell her. Just MHO. Ah, but you forget, Soquili, the missionaries had been in Burma before. They knew how dangerous it was and had seen the aftermath of attacks from the Burmese army (although you're right, they hadn't experienced being kidnapped and tortured first hand). Even after the experience with the pirates (and watching several men shot to death), Sarah still pushed to go ahead with their mission. Sarah might seem naive, but obviously she had seem some sh*t, for lack of a better phrase, and made an informed decision about completing the mission. As far as Rambo giving Co's necklace away, I don't think he did that because he didn't want a reminder, I felt he was pa*sing it on and letting go. It was like a talisman to him and he gave it to the boy because he felt he was worthy of wearing it. Like I said, I wouldn't say the thing between Rambo and Sarah was love, but I think Jay is right, they had a connection. I think the look on Sarah's face at the end was a look of trauma and shock and then she looked to Rambo and they reached a level of understanding. Very few people have come from where Rambo came from (a 'normal' life) and gone on to see the things Rambo has seen and now Sarah is one of those few. And why is the forum bleeping out 'p-a-s-s-i-n-g'

Evilbichon: I did not notice that about the cross, that's so awesome. When the DVD comes out I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for that.
There is a photo on the web that would seem to hold with the theory that he was wearing the cross at the end of the movie. I included it on my screenshots.

So he has not FORGOTTEN her, or "given away" memories (of her). The cross is still "in place". That's a very very good sign, an awesome suggestion!
Well, Soquili, I wasn't saying that Sarah looked at him in need to imply that she loved him (because it's not exactly "love") --- but she looked at him and cried. Her emotional barriers went down. It shows there's a STRONG connection between the two. At a certain point Rambo seemed very disappointed that she was JUST searching for Michael. Have you noticed that?
I think this is a delicate story of love, not your average, dull cliché.

Overall, I liked how subtle the whole Rambo/Sarah relationship was. It leaves it open for interpretation. I don't know if I want Sarah in Rambo 5, but I would like to see the story of Rambo continue for one last movie. Just to wrap some things up maybe.

It's so great to read what take others have on a particular thread. I've gotten a great deal of insight on this character and things I perhaps didn't understand have come to light. This is one fantastic site. I did catch that poignant look he gave Sarah...kind heartwrenching.

Nobody in the world (except WE FANS) ever realized that Rambo is the saddest hero of all the times... and I love HOW subtle is everything concerning him, really everything. There's a lot of secrets to flesh out yet!

There's a lot of secrets to flesh out yet! Good call. I thought the ending of Rambo 4 really drove that point home. Rambo looks at Sarah for a minute, but eventually he just leaves to walk his lonely path. Rambo is a lonely loner. Maybe it is fitting that the character is always like this. If they did a Rambo 5 they could go in two directions. They could maybe even further this loner thing, and end Rambo 5 on a bittersweet note, or they could help Rambo find some closure. I don't know if I like the idea of Rambo finding a family, but I think that after all the crap he's been through he's deserves some sort of happy ending. Maybe he could get a girlfriend.

He looked kind of cast aside up there on the hill. Like after all he did, he wasn't even noticed almost. And then finally a couple of them look up and realize he is just standing there.

I don't know if I like the idea of Rambo finding a family, but I think that after all the crap he's been through he's deserves some sort of happy ending. Maybe he could get a girlfriend. I agree with this. I don't think a stereotypical happy ending would work with Rambo for various reasons (I just don't feel it would be true to the Rambo story), but I would like him to be happy in some way and find companionship with someone. That's why I really liked the end of Rambo...It wasn't a perfect, cliched happy ending, but Rambo finally went home. He's obviously not dead inside despite everything he's been through, he's reaching out for a connection with someone who knew John Rambo the man before he was John Rambo the one man army. At this point, viewing this movie as the end of the series (I know there have been talks of a fifth Rambo film, but that very well may never happen), I like to think Rambo and Sarah ran into each other again somehow.

Now that I've seen 'RAMBO':
There is NO evidence that Sarah wasn't "romantically interested" in John. There is NO evidence that Sarah and Michael WERE/ARE romantically involved. In the end, she was searching for Michael because he was her best friend and they experienced hell together... she was still traumatized, and Micheal was her "link" with a more civilized reality. BUT in the very end, she looks at John and cries. I think she loves him, somehow.
I agree, I saw it in the chemistry between the charectors the first time I watched it. But I'am glad nothing happend, it was better left as a "it can never be" kind of thing, which actually tugs at your heart alot more.

Yeah, I liked this "not visible" thing between the two too; it wasn't a romantic cliché but a deep and solid underground feeling. Sly is a genius, no way.

Is it my imagination, or would Rambo have been back in the USA 20 years ago if Co Bao hadn't have got drilled by the VC?
Until that point, he still intended to 'Go America' once the mission was complete. It wasn't the beaucracy but the death of the love interest that became the last straw...

You're not wrong. Rambo would have come back in America... with Co.
You're right.

Because Rambo promised her that.
And when Rambo promises something... Well.. No need to explain!
