Apologies if this has been asked before but where/when exactly does the character of Col. Podovsky get killed in Part II ?

Welcome Bill!
If memory serves me well, he (Podovsky) was the pilot of the helicopter which Rambo hit at the end of the battle, in the climax of the movie. What a blast.
Podovsky is my favourite villain, by the way.

I'd agree with The Crimson Idol on that one!
I instantly thought about that villain from the bond movie Octupussy when i saw him, and i knew it was the one.
I believe his role in Octupussy must have scored him the part in First Blood: Part II...

I was on my feet cheering when Rambo blew that sucker away! Same here, dude. But he didn't seem as evil as the Russians were in III. Just my opinon.

Russians in 'RAMBO III' were very cruel and subtle, you're right, Raven. At the Mujaheddin camp in the beginning of the movie, it was a REAL ma*sacre. People tend to forgive that 'RAMBO III' was a violent movie back to its time of release, 1988.

Podovsky is my favorite villain, by the way. Podovsky (Steven Berkoff) was the Pilot of the Hind helicopter gunship, which Rambo blows up with the LAW Rocket launcher, not in the climax of Rambo 3, same type of helicopter, but that was Marc De Jonge (Zaysen).
