Rico,
You're a smart guy.
And I like Armand Assante.

As simple as that, in 2007 Rambo was ashamed to admit that he joined the Army and wasn't drafted, so he lied.

As simple as that, in 2007 Rambo was ashamed to admit that he joined the Army and wasn't drafted, so he lied. Perhaps he just didn't want to elaborate that much and make the story as easy to digest for Sarah as possible. He had a much different relationship with Gabriela later on, so he could be more open towards her. For Sarah in IV, it was just not her business at that point, to really know what drove Rambo. In the theatrical cut he kind of deflected most of her questions. So when he told her, that he was drafted, he just didn't want her to ask any further and tell more about himself than he was willing to. That's at least the way I always interpreted this.

Brilliant insight. It's not like Rambo is willing to talk about his past, larger than life issues with Reevis (his own father) with the first person he stumbles upon. When you reveal: "I left home and joined the Army at 17" - well, you're basically raising way too many disturbing or not-truly-wanted questions to answer for.

The debate is still open about RAMBO III:
1987 or 1988?
This is hard to tell, but 1988 was way too late for having Russian warlords operating in full mode in Afghanistan, I guess...

One could argue that the villain went rogue against his own country...

Are we sure that Maria had been working for Reevis before the 10-year arc presumibly mentioned in the movie? (must check this, even). Maybe Maria just joined John at the ranch? Maria (and the actress) is younger than John.

My take would be '87, as most of the film was shot in that year. Just per my own rule of thumb, when there is no specific date or year mentioned, the film takes place at the same time it is being filmed.

One could argue that the villain went rogue against his own country... In what regard?

Maria (and the actress) is younger than John. Yes, I think she had worked with Reevis for a long time. At one point she says to John, that he reminded her of his father, sitting in that rocking chair, looking over the land. To me this sounded like a long standing work and personal relationship before Reevis had passed, and after that she just carried the torch until eventually John came along.

One could argue that the villain went rogue against his own country... In what regard? That the Russian general (Zaysen) was going against the orders of his own motherland. Kinda of.

That the Russian general (Zaysen) was going against the orders of his own motherland. Kinda of. Could be. He said "out here I have no superiors", kind of establishing his own kingdom out there with exceptional cruelty, something like Colonel Kurtz in "Apocalypse Now". Interesting theory for sure.
